Learn about the concept behind MiMir
Why MiMir exists, and the idea of a private, living story library built around the people who matter most.
I made this video so long ago, but in some ways it still feels like yesterday. I had nothing but a need and a concept when this video was made. I remember deciding to make it because it was so hard to explain the idea and why it was different from other options like Facebook, Storyworth or Remento, some of which didn’t even exist yet when I first made it.
The first version was just the concept, but a few years ago, when Bob passed, I added the example. It was fitting, since Bob was like a second father to me and was always on my mind as someone I wanted MiMir around for. Bob could tell a story, and we will all miss that.
Having talked to hundreds of people over the past seven years of working on MiMir, I’ve found that they all had a Bob, or a father who was an only child. Situations like these are so common that they are woven through our collective life experience.
MiMir is not designed to keep us from missing them, or to treat or delay our grief when we lose someone. It is intended to help us relive, celebrate and learn from the stories that made the people we love who they are. It is intended to preserve today and connect tomorrow.
This video illustrates real stories from my family that mean so much to me that I will never forget them. Despite how well I remember these stories, the fact is that I never got to capture many of them in a way that gives them the impact they had on me when I first listened to them.
It was emotional and fun to recreate them this way, but the stories about my grandfather’s wartime letters from my grandmother, my brother’s first heartbreak, or my mother’s worries about having kids will never be told to my kids the way they were told to me.
We are fortunate to still have my wife’s mother around to tell her stories in the way only she can.
